Capella University, an accredited online university, raises nearly $200k for local charities

Staff and faculty, both local and offsite, participated in events and activities to raise contributions during the online university's Community United 2010 Fall Philanthropic Campaign

MINNEAPOLIS, December 9, 2010 – Minnesota's third largest university, Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, raised nearly $200k during its annual Community United Fall Philanthropic Campaign. The amount of money raised by the online university's staff and faculty during the campaign was almost 25% more than what was donated in 2009. Employees were able to donate to any 501(c)3 of their choice, but the majority of proceeds were donated to the Greater Twin Cities United Way, Community Health Charities, and the American Heart Association. Not to be outdone, during their Summer Service Week Capella employees pledged in excess of 40,000 hours of volunteer service to their community for 2011.

"Our learners and alumni are making differences in the worlds of those around them every single day," said Chris Bonnell, Capella University's 2010 Community United co-chair. "And so are our faculty and staff."

Since 2001, Capella University has been dedicated to improving our community at large through elevating volunteer opportunities, leveraging financial contributions, and reflecting the incredible spirit of service of the entire organization. Dr. Feranda Williamson, dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies, provided executive sponsorship for the campaigns this year, encouraging more than 2,700 faculty and staff who work at the university to participate in scheduled events and activities in order to raise contributions.

"This year's Community United campaigns exemplified our 'One Capella' model of both faculty and staff working together to provide service to their communities," commented Williamson. "The thousands of volunteer hours and financial contributions by both local and offsite employees is a demonstration of Capella's values in action."

More than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University, with 30 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 48 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs.
