Capella University PhD student named Director of the Homeland Security Academy & Center for Academic and Agency Outreach

Cheryl Seminara, who is completing a PhD from the online university, will lead continuing education program for Department of Homeland Security employees

MINNEAPOLIS, August 12, 2009 - Cheryl Seminara, a PhD student in the School of Business and Technology at Capella University (www.capella.edu) has been named the Director of the Homeland Security Academy, which is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's continuing education program offered through the Department of Defense Senior Service Schools. The 218,000 employees of the Department of Homeland Security have the opportunity to earn a master's degree at those schools through the Homeland Security Academy, which fully funds tuition and educational expenses.

In her new role, Seminara coordinates all of the Department of Homeland Security's academic, rotational assignment, mentor, and intern/extern programs, as well as the partnerships with other federal agencies.

Capella is an accredited*, fully online university that has built its reputation by providing quality graduate education for working adults. More than 80 percent of Capella students are pursuing either a master's degree or a doctoral degree online.

"Capella is one of the main reasons that I have been able to be successful right from the start at the Department of Homeland Security." Seminara said. "The courses were relevant to what I was doing, and I am pretty confident that I would not be here today if I had not been a scholar-practitioner at Capella University."

Capella has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"I am quite proud of Capella's designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence, as one of my main responsibilities is to work with schools around the nation to identify partnership opportunities for the Department of Homeland Security," Seminara said.

Previously, Seminara served as the Project Lead for Training for the Yucca Mountain Project in Nevada, where she developed training programs for hundreds of engineers, biochemists, geologists, and other scientists — working on one of the most sensitive projects in the scientific field today.
