The online university now offers three CACREP-accredited master's degree programs in counseling
MINNEAPOLIS, August 11, 2009 - The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has granted accreditation to Capella University's School Counseling program. Capella now offers three CACREP-accredited master's degree programs in counseling: Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, and School Counseling. Capella University (www.capella.edu) is an accredited*, fully online university that has built its reputation by providing quality education for working adults.
Capella's School Counseling master's degree program is built on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and includes course work, field training, and residencies. It is designed to prepare someone to deliver and manage contemporary school counseling programs, and act as a school leader who can advocate for the personal, educational, and social needs of students.
"People who choose this specialization are often interested in pursuing licensure as school counselors," said Deborah Bushway, PhD, Dean of Capella's School of Human Services. "According to CACREP, accreditation provides recognition that the content and quality of the education offered by the accredited program has been evaluated extensively and meets standards set by and for the profession. This can help the student to be confident that appropriate knowledge and skills areas necessary for entry into the counseling field are covered well by the program. As a graduate of a CACREP-accredited program, a student applying for certification by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) will have the two years of post-secondary supervised experience waived. This facilitates and expedites one's experience in becoming National Certified Counselor (NCC)."
CACREP is an independent agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit master's degree programs. The mission of CACREP is to promote the professional competence of counseling and related practitioners.
