Capella University announces online EdD specialization in Reading and Literacy

The new online degree specialization will help address the growing demand for reading and literacy leadership expertise

MINNEAPOLIS, August 9, 2010 Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, announced today that it now offers a Reading and Literacy specialization as part of its Doctor of Education (EdD) degree program. More than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 31 percent enrolled in Capella’s doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella’s master's degree programs.

One of few online EdD Reading and Literacy specializations
“Reading and literacy skills can play a pivotal role in increasing individual student success and closing the educational achievement gap in the United States,” said Barbara Butts Williams, PhD, dean of Capella’s School of Education. “Consequently, we are seeing a growing demand for leadership expertise in this field. We want to help meet that need with our new EdD specialization in Reading and Literacy, which is one of the few available online. It also allows graduates of our MS in Education, Reading and Literacy specialization to pursue a doctoral degree in their field of interest.”

Designed around national standards
Capella’s EdD specialization is designed around national reading and literacy education standards and covers such topics as program development and management, assessment and evaluation, data-driven decision making, and district, state, and national policies that can affect how reading is taught. In addition to online course work, the program includes field experiences in diverse educational settings, and an action dissertation project designed to address a current reading and literacy challenge identified in the field. The specialization is designed to be completed in just over three years, with all courses taken in sequence, allowing students to learn and build professional relationships with the same cohort of education colleagues.

Enrollment now open
Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its EdD Reading and Literacy specialization. For more information, please call 1.888.CAPELLA (227.3552) or email info@capella.edu.
