MINNEAPOLIS, August 5, 2010 Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced a new Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Science (MS) in Public Safety joint degree program. The program allows students to earn two complementary master's degrees in less time and at less cost than pursuing the two degree programs separately. More than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 31 percent enrolled in Capella’s doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella’s master's degree programs.
Joint degree program emphasizes multidisciplinary and collaborative skills
“Many public issues are cross-sector challenges that require multidisciplinary skills and the ability to work collaboratively to develop innovative solutions,” said Charles Tiffin, PhD, interim co-dean of Capella’s School of Public Service Leadership. “Capella's MPA/MS in Public Safety joint degree program prepares public service professionals to meet those challenges across the public administration and public safety fields. Our curriculum is built around the reality of interagency collaboration. When you collaborate effectively with other disciplines you directly impact the effectiveness of your own organization.”
The curriculum for the joint program covers such topics as strategic management and planning; organizational leadership and human resource management; policy analysis and research; ethnic and cultural awareness; accounting and finance; and training and performance improvement, all from public administration and public safety perspectives. Advanced learning technologies provide students with opportunities to test real-world scenarios and build a lifelong professional network.
