Capella University, an accredited online university, announces five new education offerings

The online university's new offerings include master's and PhD specializations in Multidisciplinary Human Services

MINNEAPOLIS, July 28, 2011 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced the launch of five new educational offerings. They include a new master's degree specialization in Multidisciplinary Human Services as well as a PhD specialization in Multidisciplinary Human Services. Capella also announced three new bachelor's-level concentrations in Project Management, Marketing, and Finance. As of June 30, 2011, more than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 31 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs.

Capella's new online master's and PhD specializations in Multidisciplinary Human Services were created to develop human service professionals and leaders with a multidisciplinary approach to addressing community issues and creating community value. In the Master of Science in Human Services specialization in Multidisciplinary Human Services, students learn to integrate best practices and research to promote positive change in their communities and be effective contributors to multidisciplinary initiatives. The PhD in Human Services specialization in Multidisciplinary Human Services features advanced human service studies and original doctoral research that position graduates to lead change within their communities and the field of human services.

"Creating positive change within a community increasingly requires an ability to understand and coordinate with other professionals and agencies," said Suzanne Holmes, DPA, dean of Capella's School of Public Service Leadership. "The new Multidisciplinary Human Services graduate specializations leverage our school's expertise in developing professional collaborations and using multidisciplinary approaches to address issues facing organizations and communities. For example, students will have an opportunity to participate in our cutting-edge crisis simulation, Riverbend City, which allows participants to step into various public service leadership roles, strengthening the collaboration skills important to managing crisis situations.

"Because human services is such a diverse field, our new specializations also offer significant opportunities for customization," continued Holmes. "Both are designed around educational standards in the field, providing a strong core of human services expertise, while also offering a wide choice of electives that allows students to personalize the program to fit their goals."

New degree enrichment options

Capella offers its students a variety of ways to increase the value of their degree and expand their career options, including concentrations. Most recently, Capella began offering concentrations in Project Management, Marketing, and Finance as part of selected BS in Business, BS in Information Technology, BS in Nursing, BS in Psychology, and BS in Public Safety degree programs. Concentrations allow students to delve more deeply into a specific knowledge area within their degree program by taking a predetermined set of courses. Students can use elective courses, if available, toward earning a concentration, which can reduce the additional time and cost of pursuing the concentration.
