MINNEAPOLIS, June 17, 2011 – The Association for Play Therapy (APT) has approved Capella University's Center for the Study of Play Therapy as an Approved Center of Play Therapy Education. The center houses Capella's Play Therapy Certificate. The designation makes Capella one of the few online universities to have been named an Approved Center of Play Therapy Education. Capella Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults. As of March 31, 2011, nearly 40,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 31 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs. "Because the rapidly increasing use of play therapy is also boosting demand for more university play therapy programs, APT applauds Capella University for the establishment of the Center," said Bill Burns, CAE, president and CEO of the APT. "We are confident it will significantly advance our growing field and serve those who counsel clients, particularly children, in schools, public agencies, private practices, and other venues."
Play therapy is a form of mental health counseling or psychotherapy used by licensed mental health professionals to better communicate with and help clients achieve optimal mental health. It is particularly effective with children because, just as adults use words to communicate and express themselves, children use play. The APT recently launched its Approved Center program to acknowledge those universities generating substantial play therapy research, publications, graduate instruction, supervised clinical experiences, supervisor training, and other programs.
Capella's five-course Play Therapy Certificate program addresses the core academic content areas required by the APT to earn its registered play therapist and supervisor credentials. Students learn play therapy theory, methodology, and applications with expert faculty.
