Online degree provider honored with this best-practices award in five of the last six years, including a double win in 2010

MINNEAPOLIS, June 3, 2011Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, announced today that it has won a Blackboard Exemplary Course Award for the sixth time. The course, "Innovative Business Practices in Health Care," is recognized as exemplifying best practices for other institutions seeking to design engaging online courses. As of March 31, 2011, nearly 40,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella, with 31 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs. Approximately 12 percent of Capella students are affiliated with the military.

"We are proud to support Capella University and its continued excellence in teaching and learning," said Tim Hill, president of Blackboard Professional Education (ProEd). "As the only institution to receive six Exemplary Course Awards since 2006, Capella is a true example of a forward-thinking organization that is consistently demonstrating best practices for online courses."

Capella faculty and staff will attend Blackboard’s annual user conference, BbWorld™, in July to accept the award and to showcase the award-winning course in a poster session. The online university won Blackboard Exemplary Course Awards for two courses in 2010, and for one course each year in 2009, 2007 and 2006.

Since 2000, the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program has highlighted technologically rich courses that are engaging, well designed, and pedagogically sound, and that represent examples of best practices in the e-learning community. Entries are evaluated in a rigorous peer-review process by more than 200 faculty and instructional designers. Submissions were judged on the following components: course design, interaction, collaboration, assessment and learner support.
