Department of Defense (DoD) selects Capella University PhD student for a returning Information Assurance Scholarship

Scholarship recipient is pursuing an online PhD in Information Technology

MINNEAPOLIS, June 1, 2011 – The Department of Defense (DoD) has once again selected a Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) graduate student to receive its Information Assurance Scholarship. The DoD has created this full-ride scholarship to recruit and retain well-qualified personnel for work in the information assurance field, and to cultivate continuing capacity for information assurance workforce development at select institutions of higher learning throughout the United States. Capella is an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults. As of March 31, 2011, nearly 40,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella, with 31 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs. Approximately 12 percent of Capella students are affiliated with the military.

The scholarship winner, who also received the scholarship last year, is pursuing an online PhD in Information Technology with a specialization in Information Assurance and Security at Capella, which reflects the competencies required by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security to produce well-educated learners who can be responsible for the design, development, use and maintenance of critical infrastructure systems.

The scholarship winner is a clinical informatics & corporate project manager with 20 years of experience in the health care field. In addition to the scholarship, the recipient will receive an annual stipend, and if all conditions are met, will also receive a full-time position with the DoD upon graduation.

Capella has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The DoD only makes its Information Assurance Scholarship available to students of schools that have this designation. In addition, the National Security Administration's Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Review Committee has validated that Capella's information security curriculum meets the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) National Standards.
