Capella University Offers New Online PhD in Business Program

Online degree program includes specializations in General Business and Accounting

MINNEAPOLIS, May 29, 2009 - Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited* online university that has built its reputation by providing quality education for adults, announced today that it is launching an online PhD in Business with specializations in General Business and Accounting. The new program will help address the significant shortage of doctoral-qualified business and accounting faculty.

“Enrollment in undergraduate and MBA programs is growing, but there has not been equivalent growth in the number of doctoral-qualified business faculty to meet the demand,” said William Reed, PhD, acting dean of Capella's School of Business and Technology. “We're in a strong position to help address that need. Capella is one of the top PhD-granting institutions in the country, and the School of Business and Technology already has excellent business and accounting faculty in place who bring both academic credentials and practical business knowledge to the courseroom.

“The shortage is particularly acute in accounting,” continued Reed. “At an Accounting Programs Leadership Group conference, it was suggested that online PhD programs that appeal to working professionals and to students with family commitments could help address that shortage. Capella's PhD specialization in Accounting definitely fits the bill.”

Both of Capella's new doctoral specializations are research-based PhDs, a preferred credential for business faculty. The program is also appropriate for professionals pursuing or currently holding business leadership, research, or consulting positions. The curriculum is based on recognized industry standards and also incorporates insight and expertise from Capella's Business Management Advisory Council. With these two new offerings, business and organizational leaders now can choose from 12 Business, Organization and Management, and Information Technology doctoral specializations at Capella.

Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its PhD in Business specializations. For more information, please call 1-888-CAPELLA (227-3552) or e-mail info@capella.edu.

Review of this specialization is pending in AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, KY, MN, ND, SC, VA, WA, and WI.
