Capella University Launches Three New Graduate Psychology Specializations

Specializations address demand for executive coaches, organizational leaders, and assessment & evaluation skills

MINNEAPOLIS, May 23, 2007 - Capella University, an accredited* online university based in Minneapolis, Minn., has announced that its Harold Abel School of Psychology will launch three specializations within its master's degree program. The new Master of Science in Psychology specializations include Leadership Coaching Psychology; Organizational Leader Development and Evaluation, Research, and Measurement.

Businesses and individuals are increasingly turning to executive coaching to improve professional and personal potential, creating a demand for coaching professionals with expertise in both behavioral change and business culture. Capella's new Leadership Coaching Psychology specialization is designed to provide the psychological, business, and motivational competencies needed in an effective coach. It is among the first master's-level coaching specializations available through a psychology program, making it particularly appealing to psychologists who want to develop a coaching practice, as well as those with responsibility for executive coaching and leadership development within a business.

With many of today's businesses projecting a leadership shortage, there is also a critical need for individuals with a deep understanding of organizational leadership that goes beyond traditional management skills. Capella's new Organizational Leader Development specialization provides a rare opportunity to develop leadership abilities from a psychological perspective, including understanding individual emotional responses, group power dynamics, and the traits and behaviors associated with strong leaders.

Capella's third new psychology specialization, Evaluation, Research, and Measurement, is designed to address the growing need for highly-skilled assessment and evaluation professionals. These skills are increasingly in demand by corporations, nonprofit organizations, schools, and other performance-based organizations that want to determine the effectiveness of their policies and processes, and improve their use of quantitative and qualitative data for planning and decision-making purposes.

“All three of these specializations offer opportunities to develop psychology-based skills in areas where there is high demand, but few educational alternatives,” said Garvey House, dean of Capella's Harold Abel School of Psychology. “They also leverage Capella’s existing strengths in industrial/organizational psychology, leadership development, and educational psychology.”

Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its School of Psychology master's degree specializations in Leadership Coaching Psychology, Organizational Leader Development, and Evaluation, Research, and Measurement. For more information, please call 1-888-CAPELLA (227-3552), option 3, or e-mail info@capella.edu. Review of these specializations is pending in the following states: AL, AZ, FL, GA, KY, WA, and WI.
