MINNEAPOLIS, May 19, 2011 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, today announced a significant redesign of its MBA program. The revised program offers a rigorous curriculum that integrates core business disciplines with the advanced leadership and professional skills needed to excel in high-performing, global organizations. Capella's MBA also offers significant opportunities for working professionals to personalize their MBA program to match their career goals, and provides a wide range of resources designed to help students achieve academic and on-the-job success. As of March 31, 2011, more than 39,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 31 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs.
Creating innovative, ethical, global business leaders
The redesign is the culmination of two years of externally validated research, both quantitative and qualitative, to determine the skills and qualities seen as most valuable to businesses, as well as the program and curriculum elements most desired by potential students.
"We used this information to update our core curriculum to ensure that our MBA graduates have the leadership, communication, critical thinking, and decision-making skills necessary to lead the complex, global organizations of today and tomorrow," said Bill Reed, PhD, acting dean of Capella's School of Business and Technology. "We've embedded global perspectives, leadership, ethics, and the use of technology throughout our core curriculum, rather than covering these important, over-arching knowledge areas in single courses. We also included resources, such as MBA Central, an online portal for academic and program resources, and mobile applications that allow working adults even more flexibility in how they incorporate their academic pursuits into busy professional and personal lives. Both our curriculum and our support services are designed to help our students transfer their courseroom learning into immediate, on-the-job success."
Capella adds Business Intelligence and Entrepreneurship MBA specializations
Concurrent with the MBA program redesign, Capella has launched two new specializations, Business Intelligence and Entrepreneurship. "We added these specializations because both address skills critically needed in our current business environment," said Dr. Reed. "Business intelligence—the ability to develop meaningful business insights from multiple and disparate data sources—plays an increasingly important role in strategic decision making. Our Entrepreneurship specialization addresses the importance of highly skilled entrepreneurs to our country's ability to create new businesses and jobs."
With the two new specializations, Capella MBA students can now personalize their MBA degree program by choosing from 11 MBA specializations, including a General Business Administration specialization that maximizes elective choices so students can customize their area of specialization through course choices and/or transfer credits. The other specializations include Accounting, Finance, Global Operations and Supply Chain Management, Health Care Management, Human Resource Management, Information Technology Management, Marketing, and Project Management.
