News ReleasesCapella University Graduate Named Teacher of the Year in San Francisco AreaLaurie Huffman, a PhD graduate of the online university's school of education, will be honored in September MINNEAPOLIS, May 8, 2006 — Laurie Huffman, founding coordinator of the Brentwood campus for Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, Calif., has been named Teacher of the Year for Colleges of the Contra Costa County of San Francisco. The district serves nearly 65,000 students. “I am so honored and thrilled to have received this award. To receive this type of validation for something I love to do is so gratifying,” Huffman said. “My students mean the world to me, and I am committed to helping them succeed, specifically immigrant students who need a hand adapting to life in the United States and reaching their goals.” Huffman, who is also the chairwoman of Los Medanos College's foreign languages department, earned a doctorate from Capella University's School of Education in 2005. Capella University is an accredited online university that is a pioneer in online education. “I am proof that continuing with your higher education can make your dreams come true,” Huffman said. “My PhD from Capella has done wonders for my career.” Huffman has also been awarded the East County Soroptomist “Advancing the Status of Women” honor for 2006 and was named East County Latina of the Year in 2001.
