News ReleasesCapella University to Offer New Post-Master's Certificate in College TeachingNeed for online education program is driven by anticipated demand for post-secondary faculty MINNEAPOLIS, May 4, 2006 — Over the next five to 10 years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that more than half a million college and university faculty positions will need to be filled due to faculty retirements and growth in the number of college-age students. To help meet the anticipated demand for qualified post-secondary faculty, Capella University has announced that its School of Education will begin offering a new post-master's certificate in college teaching beginning with the online university's July 2006 quarter. “Because of retirements, we are heading into an era where finding quality faculty will be a real issue,” said George Boggs, PhD, president and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges. “At the same time, there are people who have professional experience in their field and a desire to teach, but no experience or training in college teaching. Capella University's new post-master's certificate in college teaching could help bridge that gap and provide community colleges with a new pool of qualified candidates for their faculty positions.” The certificate is targeted toward subject matter experts who hold a master's degree and want to develop the instructional skills they need to be effective college teachers, as well as current faculty who want to increase their teaching effectiveness. The certificate is also appealing to those who eventually want to earn a doctoral degree, because all credits earned as part of the post-master's certificate in college teaching are automatically transferable to two of Capella's online PhD in education specializations: professional studies, and post-secondary and adult education. Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its new post-master's certificate in college teaching.
