Capella University graduate receives Sunny Andrews Award for her commitment to social work

Jeannie McGuire, who earned a master’s degree in human services from the online university, is the founder of Project Unity

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 23, 2009 -Capella University graduate Jeannie McGuire, founder of Project Unity (www.projectunitytx.org) and former chair of the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners (TSBSWE), has received the 2008 Sunny Andrews Award for outstanding commitment to social work from the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). McGuire received a master's degree in human services from Capella University (www.capella.edu) an accredited*, fully online university that has built its reputation by providing quality graduate education for working adults.

The Sunny Andrew Award is named for the former board president of the ASWB, which develops and maintains the social work licensing examinations used across the United States and in several Canadian provinces, and is a central resource for information on the legal regulation of social work.  McGuire was selected for the award for being "the kind of social worker that understands how effective regulation of the profession can be the truest way to show dedication to that profession."

McGuire, who is a licensed social worker, founded Project Unity in 1995. The nonprofit organization, which is located in Bryan, Texas, provides comprehensive case management services to underserved and low-income families to help them achieve self-sufficiency.

McGuire earned a master's degree in human services with a specialization in nonprofit management from Capella. The online university serves more than 24,000 students, approximately 85 percent of whom are pursuing master's or PhD degrees.
