MINNEAPOLIS, January 25, 2011 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, today announced a significant redesign of its nonprofit management and leadership offerings. Changes include a new Master of Nonprofit Management and Leadership (MNML) designed around industry standards for nonprofit management education, including the graduate curriculum guidelines established by the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC).
Capella also offers a PhD in Human Services, Nonprofit Management and Leadership specialization, and a Nonprofit Management and Leadership certificate, both of which were redesigned to reflect current standards in the field and renamed to reflect the dual focus on nonprofit management and leadership. A new concentration in Nonprofit Management and Leadership is also available to students in select programs. More than 38,000 students are pursuing an online education at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 30 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs and 48 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs.
Capella offerings address increased demand for nonprofit leadership skills
"Increased demand for community services, heightened government oversight, and competition for scarce resources have made nonprofit management and leadership skills more critical than ever," said Charles Tiffin, PhD, dean of Capella's School of Public Service Leadership. "That's why we thought it was important to review all of our offerings in the field to incorporate current best practices in the field and strengthen our students' capabilities to lead nonprofit organizations and develop strategic, innovative, and cooperative solutions to community problems. Our new educational offerings address the unique challenges of leading a nonprofit organization, including organizational and community collaboration, developing programming with a cultural context, and global perspectives."
Nonprofit management and leadership students will benefit from Capella's multidisciplinary approach to public service education, which offers opportunities to collaborate with public administration, public safety, and health care professionals, whose work often intersects with those in the nonprofit sector. For example, Capella's MNML and doctoral specialization in Nonprofit Management and Leadership use simulations, group problem-solving, and real-time coaching sessions to strengthen the collaboration and communication skills needed by nonprofit leaders.
"Unlike programs that focus exclusively on a business approach to nonprofit management, our offerings address leadership challenges and management approaches specific to nonprofit organizations," said Dr. Tiffin. "They truly reflect the issues faced by today's nonprofit leaders."
