MINNEAPOLIS, January 4, 2011 – The New Leadership Alliance for Student Learning & Accountability has invited Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, to be part of the Excellent Practice in Student Learning Assessment (EPSLA) institutional certification pilot. That certification program has been created to recognize high-level institutional performance in assessment and using evidence to improve student learning. In addition to Capella, the United States Naval Academy, Elon University, and the University of Central Florida are among the schools that have been invited to participate in the program. The EPSLA certification process is intended to help promote good practices in assessing and improving student learning, and encourage institutions to develop and implement processes in a more meaningful, systematic way.

The New Leadership Alliance for Student Learning & Accountability leads and supports voluntary and cooperative efforts to move the higher education community towards gathering, reporting on, and using evidence to improve student learning. The Alliance was incorporated in March 2009 and is designated a public charity. It has received support through grants from the Carnegie Corporation, the Teagle Foundation and the Hewlett Foundation.

Capella's groundbreaking work in demonstrating the learning outcomes of its students and graduates is also being honored by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), which has chosen Capella's website dedicated to learning and career outcomes, http://www.capellaresults.org, to be featured on the NILOA website, www.learningoutcomesassessment.org. The NILOA featured website showcases promising practices in innovative and transparent online communication of student learning outcomes assessment.

Capella’s Learning & Career Outcomes website has also been recognized with a “Best in Class” Interactive Media Award in 2009 from the Interactive Council, Inc. In addition, the IMS Global Learning Consortium named Capella’s Learning & Career Outcomes website infrastructure as the 2009 Best Outcomes-based Learning Solution, and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) has selected Capella to receive the 2010 Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes.

Lastly, Capella has been a leader in the Transparency by Design initiative, which consists of a group of regionally-accredited colleges and universities that focus on serving adult learners and that have committed to providing prospective adult students with the data they need to make informed choices about which higher-ed programs will best meet their educational and career goals. One of the outcomes of Transparency by Design is the College Choices for Adults website: http://www.collegechoicesforadults.org, which includes program-level information for various schools regarding what students will learn, how each program measures what students learn, and how recent students performed on those measures.
