The online university was honored with the 2010 Distance Education Innovation Award by the National University Telecommunications Network

MINNEAPOLIS, September 23, 2010 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, has been recognized by the National University Telecommunications Network (NUTN) for excellence in distance education innovation. The winning entry, "Next Generation Learning: New Models for Course Personalization and Relationship Building," won the NUTN 2010 Distance Education Innovation Award.

The entry was a result of collaboration between the online university’s School of Education and Next Generation Learning team to design the Doctorate of Education program (EdD). In the EdD program, cohorts of learners move together through a fixed sequence of eight courses that build upon each other toward acquisition of the program outcomes, including self-assessment and assessment by external experts, before reaching their dissertation phase. The NUTN award recognizes the team for developing an innovative program that contributes to the field of distance education in the context of a new or ongoing program, student or support services, pedagogy, faculty development and support or technology.

Liz Anderson, who was Next Generation Learning’s instructional designer for the winning entry, will accept the award at NUTN's distance learning summit September 27-29, 2010. “An innovative use of technology was at the core when designing the EdD,” commented Anderson. “It’s wonderful to have our team’s hard work recognized at this level. It demonstrates Capella’s continued commitment to be a leader of technology and innovative teaching methods in the online learning environment.”

Capella University’s online public speaking class was recognized by NUTN in 2008 with the Shirley Davis Award for Excellence in Teleconferencing. More than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (, with 31 percent enrolled in doctoral degree programs, and 47 percent enrolled in master’s degree programs.
