Vice President, New Business Development

The Vice President New Business Development will be primarily responsible for identifying and delivering new business opportunities that will account for an incremental 15% to 25% of Capella Education Company's revenue within 5 years. This includes the strategic direction for Capella's new business development activities as well as the leadership of the cross-functional team necessary to identify and qualify both non-degree new business opportunities within existing markets, new business initiatives outside of core markets and identifying new markets to pursue.

This executive will be a key cross-functional executive leader within Capella, working closely with leadership in Market Management, Marketing, Operations, IT and Capella's schools to understand the markets & learners, leverage Capella's overarching positioning, and build off of the company's core operational assets.

This is a highly visible position that reports to the President/COO, chairs the NBD Council (made up of the CEO, CFO, VP-HR and COO) and has frequent interaction and updates with the Board. This position is also a key member of the executive leadership team headed by the COO and in charge of setting overall direction for the company. Reporting to this role will be a direct and indirect staff of over five.

Responsibilities:

  • Driving the strategic vision for new business opportunities
  • Deliver revenue and profit growth through new business initiatives
  • Lead assessment of new opportunities
  • Aligning NBD opportunities with strategic vision of Capella.
  • Chair of “NBD Council”
  • Recommending direction on in-house development versus external acquisition/partnership of new opportunities
  • Leading the evaluation and assessment of potential business partnerships, strategic alliances, acquisitions, joint ventures and 3rd party relationships
  • Key Role in vision and decisions involving M&A activities
  • Developing and driving a strong external presence for Capella in understanding new opportunities, networking, and building relationships
  • Identifying, building, and managing long-term relationships with strategic partners.
  • Identifying new Strategic Initiatives supported by NBD activities that can transform Capella
  • Navigating company processes, aligning resources and building collaboration on key NBD opportunities
  • >Build NBD capability as well as building NPD/NBD process excellence within Capella
  • One of the champions of Innovation within culture
  • Managing change and generating supporting for non-traditional concepts and ideas; helping the organization to think past current markets and programs
  • NBD team building, including Managing, motivating, and developing departmental staff

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned business executive with 15+ years of increasing responsibility in new business development, product management, mergers and acquisitions, or other related disciplines. The successful candidate will have previous leadership in a sizeable, blue-chip organization with experience managing budgets, evaluating ROI and P&L ownership. In addition, specific expertise in consumer products and services marketing, research, and market segmentation as well as experience launching new business initiatives through a structured, formal gated process is critical. While specific industry backgrounds are not required, experience in marketing, technology, financial services, telecom or internet companies is preferred. In addition, the ability to transition between industries and work in small company / start-up environments is preferred. An MBA / related advanced degree or commensurate experience is also required.
