Manager Unix Operations #6394
- The Unix Operations group has responsibility for the
following, when hosted on Unix systems:
- Hardware, OS, database, application, and web
maintenance and configuration for enterprise Unix systems
- 2nd level technical support for all issues Level 1
cannot resolve.
- Root cause analysis and problem management.
- Promotion of changes and implementation of
upgrades, application and web server builds and configuration.
- Identification of key monitoring metrics around
Unix systems regarding capacity, user experience and availability.
- Identification, response, resolution and prevention of problem conditions that may impact availability or user experience.
- The Manager, Unix Operations is responsible for
day-to-day operations of the team to ensure all production systems are
supported and maintained in order to meet service level agreements, timely
upkeep and maintenance of Staging and Production environments.
- Infrastructure architecture
- Capacity and disaster recovery planning
- Maximizing uptime and meeting Service Level
Agreement (SLA) goals
- First Response to all issues (regardless of Unix or other OS) on rotation as assigned
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for supervising and hiring staff and managing overall workload. Directly supervises team of systems, operating system, and database administrators.
- Maintain readily available coverage of all applications at all times (24/7/365).
- Raise awareness and prestige of the Unix Operations team within Capella and evangelize best practices.
- Coaching and development of staff to ensure strong client service focus and technical expertise (with an emphasis on defined training and development planning for staff.)
- Building policies, procedures and documentation for Unix Operations function.
- Responsible for setting overall service level goals and defining strategies to meet the service goals.
- Acts as overall escalation resource for line staff.
- Accurately reports and analyzes system capacity and availability results to Capella at large.
- Lead escalated problem resolution efforts including coordination of internal staff (not limited to Unix Operations team) and vendor resources.
- Ensure the Unix Operations team manages Problems consistently and report on Problem status to management regularly.
- Supervising overall disaster recovery process for systems managed by the group.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of IT experience, 3+ years as a manager of a team with similar responsibilities along with 2+ years in system/application administrator or developer role, as well as 2+ years in a technical support role.
- Bachelor's degree in IT related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in IT-related finance disciplines such as capital and expense budget management, planning and forecasting.
- Broad knowledge of IT systems architecture in real-world settings, with understanding of network infrastructure, server operating systems, monitoring and troubleshooting tools, server hardware and enterprise application software.
- Relevant production support management of teams supporting key technologies: Solaris, WebLogic, Oracle 10g RAC and Dataguard, Symantec Storage Foundation, Vintela, PeopleSoft and Blackboard Vista.
- Strong understanding of software development and deployment practices and tools, preferably through direct experience. Peoplesoft experience preferred.
This position is based in Capella's corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota and relocation assistance is not provided.
