Faculty Chair for Information Assurance and Security #6046

Faculty chairs are full-time faculty members delivering on the Capella Brand Promise by providing leadership to faculty and enrolled learners within a program or specialization regarding curriculum planning and development, maintenance of academic standards, and assurance of quality educational experiences, faculty management, learner issues and financial management in all phases of the program. The Faculty Chairs are responsible for ensuring that courses and curriculum reflect current knowledge in the field, are delivered by subject matter experts, are relevant to business professionals, and are competency based. Faculty chairs also serve as faculty members. The distribution of time devoted to teaching and related faculty activities and leadership/management responsibilities will be determined based on the size and maturity of the program, number of supporting faculty and staff, and program degree content.

Responsibilities:

  • Specific accountabilities include:
    • Faculty Management: Recruits, interviews and recommends adjunct and core faculty for teaching in program area; Actively supports diversity initiatives; Mentors and orients new faculty; Reviews learner comments and other faculty evaluation tools to assess faculty performance; Provides feedback and coaching to faculty; Initiates performance improvement or disciplinary action for underperforming faculty; Maintains effective communication with faculty, learners, and staff affiliated with program area; Teaches and leads development of faculty development courses; Implement faculty skill improvement courses and other activities; Takes over Courseroom activities for vacationing Core Faculty.
    • Curriculum Development and Improvement: Leads the design and development of courses and course materials including course plans, objectives, outcomes, teaching aids, activities and evaluation tools; Identifies resources as needed; Ensures sensitivity to race, gender and disability in curriculum design, course content and study materials; Ensures courses reflect current knowledge and practice of the field within a competency based curriculum. Oversees Courseroom activity to ensure overall quality of the learning experience.
    • Course Participation: Provides expertise in subject matter; Facilitates course discussions ensuring active participation among learners creating entries at least 3–6 times per week; Responds to learner inquiries within 24–48 hours; Assesses learner assignments and engagement; Provides appropriate feedback, coaching and reinforcement of effective critical thinking; Reports at risk learners to appropriate staff; Encourages learner participation in course-end evaluation forms; Provides innovative input designed to make teaching practices more effective; Adheres to quality standards and defines quality at course level in line with departmental and university norms.
    • Mentoring and Learner Committees (if appropriate): Supervises doctoral learners and participates on learner committees; Provides general guidance and consultation to learners through emails, phone contact and at residencies; Reviews thesis and comprehensive exams and provides feedback to learner and/or mentor. Advises mentees of progress and maintains appropriate documentation. Ensures quality of mentoring within program.
    • Residencies (if appropriate): Conducts site based residencies courses and focus seminars, as needed.
    • Retention: Contributes to achievement of learner retention goals through effective supervision of Courseroom and faculty; Implements changes in curriculum, faculty, or teaching methods that may be impacting retention.
    • Learner Management: Ensures learner issues and complaints (following learner problem resolution process) beyond the scope of course faculty member or mentor are effectively resolved.
    • Accreditation: Serves as content expert for licensing and credentialing approval process and participates on accreditation teams as appropriate.
    • ASchool Governance and Faculty Committees: School Governance and Faculty Committees.
    • Contribution to the Professional Field: Maintains affiliation with professional associations.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • PhD or equivalent for Masters, MBA, and doctoral level curriculum. Minimum MBA or appropriate advanced degree for Undergraduate curriculum. Demonstrated contribution to the discipline such as publishing, committee involvement, and professional association involvement.
      For this particular Faculty Chair position the candidate must have a degree in an IT field related to Information Assurance and Security. It would be highly desirable for the candidate to possess a CISSP certification. In addition, it would be highly desirable for the candidate to be familiar with health information management, with an RHIT certification considered a plus.
  • Experience:
    • Significant experience as a practitioner in the field plus minimum 5 years teaching in a relevant educational setting or equivalent expertise applicable to education along with demonstrated leadership experience.
      Work experience in both the Information Assurance and Security field and in the Health Information Management field is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the KSA's required for core faculty, a Faculty Chair will possess:
    • Demonstrated knowledge of online teaching and mentoring and effective practices with regards to the Capella Way of Learning
    • Knowledge of professional regulatory requirements
    • Capacity to role model and leader in faculty development activities
    • Ability to influence and work effectively through others
    • Knowledge of administrative and operational requirements in program area, school and university
    • Ability to give engaging presentations to audiences that help them understand why an education in these fields is important
    • Ability to advise and assess learning effectiveness and quality of the education experience
  • Variety and Complexity of Work: In addition to the variety and complexity expected for core faculty, a Faculty Chair position includes:
    • Integrating program, academic and regulatory considerations with business strategies and plans
    • Managing multiple academic and administrative projects
    • Handling multi faceted types of problems encountered involving courses, faculty, regulatory or administrative issues
    • Presenting to corporate partners about the possibilities that Capella programs offer
    • Scheduling and assigning teaching loads
  • Impact:
    • Significant impact on learner retention plus direct impact on cost, revenue and quality assurance within a program area
  • Freedom to Act:
    • Acts independently to achieve results in support of business goals and strategies with a program area
    • Accountable for program being in compliance with all regulatory rules, and national program accreditation standards
  • Responsibility for Others:
    • Supervisory responsibility for faculty including recruitment, retention, performance results and development
  • Relationships: In addition to the expectations in the role of core faculty, Faculty Chair:
    • Works with cross-functional groups inside and outside the University; requires high level of persuasion and negotiation
    • Serves as mentor and leader setting goals and objectives for faculty, identifying roles and resource requirements
