Faculty Chair, Social and Community Services and Gerontology #6380

Faculty chairs are full-time faculty employees providing leadership to faculty and enrolled learners within a program or specialization regarding curriculum planning and development, maintenance of academic standards, and assurance of quality educational experiences, faculty management, learner issues and financial management in all phases of the program. The Faculty Chairs are responsible for ensuring that courses and curriculum reflect current knowledge in the field, are relevant to the professional competency based outcomes objectives and are delivered by subject matter experts. Faculty chairs will also be expected to serve as faculty members when their program or specialization responsibilities permit. The distribution of time devoted to teaching and related core faculty activities and leadership/management responsibilities will be determined based on the size of the program, supporting faculty and staff, and program degree content. However, the expectation is that as a result of their leadership, Faculty Chairs' program and specialization responsibilities will be of sufficient scope that their position is virtually 100% management. The Faculty Chair typically reports to a Associate Dean. These primary responsibilities will serve the Social and Community Services and Gerontology Specializations.

Responsibilities:

Specific Accountabilities include but are not limited to -

  • Faculty Management:
    Recruits, interviews and recommends adjunct and core faculty for teaching in program area; Actively supports diversity initiatives; Mentors and orients new faculty; Reviews learner comments and other faculty evaluation tools to assess performance of faculty; Provides feedback and coaching to faculty; Initiates performance improvement or disciplinary action for underperforming faculty; Maintains effective communication with faculty, learners, and staff affiliated with program area; Identifies and advocates for essential adjunct and core faculty professional development; Assists with implementation of faculty skill improvement courses and other activities.
  • Curriculum Planning, Development and Improvement:Develops curriculum plans for area of specialization to ensure curriculum for degree and certificate programs meet standards of accreditation, delivers high impact, satisfying learning experiences and incorporates contemporary knowledge and principles of the field. Leads the design and development of courses and course materials including course plans, objectives, outcomes and competencies, teaching aids, activities and evaluation tools; Identifies resources as needed; Ensures sensitivity to diversity and disability issues in curriculum design, course content and study materials; Ensures courses reflect current knowledge and practice of the field within a competency based, learning-centered curriculum. Oversees course room activity to ensure overall quality of the learning experience.
  • Mentoring and Learner Committees: Supervises doctoral learners and participates on learner committees; Provides general guidance and consultation to learners through emails, phone contact and at residencies; Reviews thesis and comprehensive exams and provides feedback to learner and/or mentor. Advises mentees of progress and maintains appropriate documentation. Ensures quality of mentoring within program.
  • Accreditation: Manages the accreditation process with in discipline, other accreditations or other licensing practices within the Mental Health Counseling discipline. Participates on accreditation teams as appropriate.
  • Admission Exceptions: Makes final approval for admission exceptions in his or her specialization.
  • Residencies: Conducts site based residencies courses and focused seminars.
  • Retention:Conducts site based residencies courses and focused seminars.
  • Learner Management: Ensures learner issues and complaints (following learner problem resolution process) beyond the scope of course faculty member or mentor are effectively resolved.
  • School Governance and Faculty Committees: Actively participates or leads appropriate department, division or University committee.
  • Contribution to the Professional Field: Maintains affiliation with professional associations.

Qualifications:

Education: PhD from a regionally accredited institution is required. Demonstrated contribution to the discipline such as publishing, committee involvement, or professional association involvement.

Licensure/Certification: None

Experience: Significant experience as a practitioner in the field plus minimum 2-4 years management experience required. Academic and/or teaching in a relevant educational setting or equivalent expertise applicable to education.
