The Dean is the strategic academic leader for the School of Business & Technology, one of Capella's six Schools, and is responsible for the overall strategic management, development and performance of the School. In this highly cross-functional role, the Dean is responsible for shaping the future of the school, defining its standard of excellence, and assuring the School provides high quality learning and related services by overseeing:

    (1) Curriculum:
    • Overseeing of the development of high quality, relevant and outcomes-based curricula (course room and colloquia settings) to ensure these outcomes are realized in a way that contributes to learner success (persistence) and satisfaction.
    • Understanding learners and their concerns, working with faculty to develop the right programs and courses, assuring curricula is outcomes-based; include rubrics tied to competencies that deliver desired outcomes, clear sequences, and pre-requisites.
    • Owning ultimate responsibility for the quality and content of programs and courses.
    • Ensuring that these programs and courses reflect current knowledge in the field, are fully relevant to the profession, and are delivered by highly qualified faculty.

    (2) Faculty:
    • Strategic oversight for the recruiting, developing and retention of qualified faculty whose performance is consistent with Capella University's learning model.
    • Executive management of the faculty experience, including training, professional development, evaluation, leadership development and administration.
    • Ensuring faculty are adequately credentialed, qualified, and highly engaged in teaching and partnering on academic matters pertaining to the School.
    • Owning executive accountability (through the Associate Dean) for auditing and teaching loads, committee assignments, and professional activities to provide balance and equity while satisfying School workload responsibilities.
    • Oversight of faculty development processes, which includes ensuring alignment, engagement, and effectiveness of adjunct faculty as well.
    • Promoting university goals for diversity.
    • Managing effectively and working collaboratively with faculty to meet institutional goals, including the nurturing of faculty research agendas.
    • Through the Associate Dean, ensuring that faculty members are actively involved in decision making processes, which affect the academic mission of the School.

    (3)Market and Program Management & Outcomes
    • Partnering with Portfolio/Market Vice Presidents to identify and execute key strategic opportunities.
    • Developing strategies based on the assessment of student learning and program reviews, ensuring the delivery of program outcomes and course competencies and engagement in University-wide initiatives, including accreditation and regulatory assurance and compliance.
    • Leading the development, review, improvement, or, if appropriate, discontinuation of programs to ensure the highest quality learning outcomes.
    • Working with leadership colleagues and the Capella community to develop and assess regularly a comprehensive business plan for the School.
    • Overseeing program effectiveness and course quality to ensure that learners achieve academic outcomes that reflect current knowledge in the field, is relevant to the profession, and is delivered by faculty experts.
    • Leading in assessment of learning, assuring that learner outcomes are measured and that the results are used to drive program improvement.
    • Responding thoughtfully yet expeditiously to the challenges of rapidly changing demographics shifts in the professional job market in education, changes in technology, and the constantly evolving needs of Capella's students.
    • Assuring the quality of programs offered at Capella University continues to grow in stature and that the place of academics within the institutional fabric remains the primary focus.

    (4) External Representation of the School
    • Maintaining and enhancing the school's reputation within the professional community it serves. This includes, but is not limited to, participation by faculty and the Dean in professional society activities, and soliciting and encouraging faculty and learner publication under the Capella banner.
    • Serving as a visible academic leader nationally in the area of online learning in higher education.
    • Serving as an external interpreter and an enthusiastic spokesperson for the university with external constituencies, advancing its distinctive mission and its innovative academic programs to enhance the school's reputation within the professional community it serves.
    • Serving as the school's liaison with national, regional, and program specific accrediting bodies.
    • Leading national efforts in outreach and nurturing of relationships with business and industry, governmental bodies, professional organizations, and affiliates.

Responsibilities:

Other key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Providing strategic leadership to school leadership team of Assistant and Associate Deans, who manage a range of functions including escalated learner issues, faculty and staff oversight, academic quality, and management of the learner experience.
  • Providing visionary and motivational leadership across the organization.
  • Developing strong rapport with and understanding of our learner population.
  • Exhibiting commitment to the university's mission while challenging colleagues to identify innovative educational opportunities and markets.
  • Fostering an environment of inclusion and transparency, which, at a minimum, will continue to involve the faculty in the decision making process as they help to set and meet high academic standards.
  • Overseeing the planning for and execution of activities designed to achieve regional and specialized accreditations and required state approvals; providing experienced counsel in regulatory and accreditation matters, to include the AQIP program through the Higher Learning Commission and state regulatory approvals.
  • Developing annual and long range plans for the School.
  • Budget planning and expense management oversight; assure delivery of instructional cost targets.
  • Traveling to colloquia with an expectation for meetings with learners, and faculty and colloquia presentations.
  • Qualifications:

    • A minimum of 10 years of scholarly achievement and progressively increasing responsibility in academic administration in a college or university setting; to include a minimum of 5 years of direct management experience.
    • Blended scholar-practitioner experience in both business and academia is ideal; candidates who may lack extensive academic experience but whose leadership abilities and outstanding accomplishments in executive business leadership could translate well to academia are also welcomed and will receive serious consideration.
    • Qualified candidates must bring expertise in building relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders on business, economics and/or technology-related issues in a wide variety of settings.
    • • Must be adept at creating, implementing and leveraging measurements and tools to assess academic quality, faculty effectiveness and learner persistence.
    • A track record of demonstrated success in:
      • articulating a compelling vision of academic or organizational excellence, and executing toward that vision
      • developing and assessing high-quality academic programs to meet the needs of adult learners at a distance
      • effectively representing an institution or organization to external academic and business constituencies, with a continuous eye to the academic or quality profile of the institution
      • effectively managing and working collaboratively with faculty or employees to meet the goals of an institution or organization
      • effectively partnering with other functional areas across the organization and with the professional community to achieve desired results
    • Previous experience serving as a faculty member; strongly prefer college level teaching experience at multiple levels.
    • Applied knowledge of educational and training needs of employers strongly preferred.
    • An experienced and capable fiscal manager who can effectively manage the intricacies of the for-profit educational environment.
    • A history of promoting diversity among staff and students.
    • A distinguished record in supporting, developing and promoting academic programs, including regional and specialized accreditation.
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excels at finding creative solutions to challenging problems, and is comfortable within a dynamic, fast-paced environment of considerable change.
    • Thrives in a high energy, richly entrepreneurial, aggressively innovative, and constantly evolving setting.
    • Creative, innovative strategist who is comfortable driving results despite ambiguity.
    • Must possess highly mission-driven orientation and style.
    • Experience in representing an institution effectively to external and business constituencies, with a continuous eye toward the academic profile of the institution.
    • Experience in developing and implementing program or school level assessment of learner academic outcomes.
    • Previous experience in online education or in a for-profit university or organization a plus but not required.
    • Candidates will need to office at our headquarters in Minneapolis, MN
    • Ability to travel as needed (up to 15%).
