Writing Program
Adjunct Faculty Positions
Responsibilities:
Writing Program faculty members currently work in any combination of the following capacities:
- Teaching and developing online writing courses. Capella offers a sequence of writing courses to graduate students, many of whom are returning to school after spending significant time in the workplace, and many of whom are new to advanced academic writing. Some courses are cross-curricular while others are discipline specific; all are designed to meet the WPA outcomes, and include multiple drafts, peer review, and final portfolios.
- Teaching online courses involves facilitating learning through weekly online discussions; responding substantively to student writing (both formal and informal); responding to student drafts using the program's general guidelines for responding, evaluating, and grading; and teaching and guiding the peer review process. Developing online courses involves working with the director of the program and an instructional designer to design a full syllabus with a pedagogically sound sequence of reading and writing assignments. It is preferable that the faculty members who design courses teach them at least once after they're completed in order to help strengthen and revise the course for subsequent quarters.
- Teaching writing sessions at Capella's Residential Colloquia. Five times a year Capella offers week-long residential colloquia for its PhD students, who spend the week attending both cross-curricular and discipline-specific sessions. The Writing Program designs and leads writing-specific sessions on cross-curricular issues (i.e., writing for an academic audience, developing style and voice in academic writing, etc.). Sessions are generally facilitated by two or more faculty members who present short lectures, facilitate full-group conversations and small-group writing activities, and help students strategize future writing assignments. Faculty who teach writing sessions may or may not also teach in the Mobile Writing Center.
- Teaching in Capella's Mobile Writing Center. At the residential colloquia the Writing Program offers a Mobile Writing Center: an onsite Writing Center that offers high-quality face-to-face instruction in a one-on-one setting. Faculty members in the Mobile Writing Center work with PhD students from across the disciplines, and have access to laptops, the internet, and a variety of print resources (dictionaries, APA style manual, handouts, etc.). Faculty who teach in the Mobile Writing Center may or may not also teach Writing Program sessions.
- Teaching at Capella's Dissertators' Retreat Beginning in the spring of 2005. Capella will be offering week-long retreats for advanced dissertators who seek quiet writing time coupled with the support of a writing coach. Writing Program faculty at the Dissertators' Retreat will be responsible for a cohort of learners for the duration of the retreat; teaching responsibilities will include providing one-on-one support to keep the writers focused and on track; facilitating peer review workshops; and facilitating optional writing workshops for all retreat members.
Qualifications:
Writing Program adjunct positions require an excellent academic background in any discipline, as well as a strong background in the teaching of academic writing, including: familiarity with the fields of Composition and Rhetoric and/or Writing Center pedagogy; a strong record of college-level classroom and/or college-level Writing Center teaching; and an interest in contributing to the development of a growing Writing Program that meets the needs of returning adult learners. Strong candidates will thrive in a fast-paced environment, will respond well to change, and will be able to communicate with learners and faculty at all levels and across all disciplines. The PhD (or terminal degree in field) is preferred; advanced ABDs are encouraged to apply.
